In a previously published Supply Chain Matters posting, we called reader attention to a perhaps different senior supply chain leadership model, which being liquor distiller Brown Forman’s new model that is led by a Chief Global Supply Chain and Technology Officer CSCTO), with IT and global information security reporting to this senior executive. The emphasis of this leadership model is noted as improving IT and advanced analytics capabilities in areas such as supply chain planning and customer fulfillment.

In this posting we provide highlights of a contrasting senior supply chain leadership model, in a different industry, with somewhat similar business process and technology enablement needs, that being branded workwear apparel provider and retailer Carhartt.

 

Executive Moves

In July of 2021, this iconic branded workwear retailer announced the promotion of Danilo Amoretty to the newly created role of Senior Vice President of Global Product Supply and Operations. According to the announcement, Amoretty joined the company’s senior leadership team tasked to develop a production, operations and procurement vision for its supply chain to ensure multi-year growth, product line expansion plans and profitability.

Amoretty joined Carhartt in March 2018 as Vice President of Supply Chain Operations where he reportedly successfully collaborated with departments across the organization to align the global supply chain and corporate strategies to realize sustainable operational and cost efficiencies. He later was appointed Vice President of Global Product Supply, tasked to deliver a new supply-driven model to position the premium workwear brand for growth. The model was a means for the company to support market demand and grow its supply chain while continuing to meet its quality commitment to customers and associates.

This new role reports to the President and Chief Operating Officer for Carhartt, Linda Hubbard. In the announcement, Hubbard indicates in part: “Over the last few years, Danilo has proven to be a strategic and innovative leader, delivering on his commitments, and building strong relationships with new and existing suppliers.”

Supporting CIO Role

The Wall Street Journal’s CIO Journal recently highlighted the appointment of a new CIO for this workwear retailer. (Paid subscription required) Katrina Agusti, formerly the company’s Vice President of Solutions Delivery stepped into the CIO role at the end of March. Augusti replaced the former Chief Digital and Information Officer who had departed the retailer. According to the report, she will have the same responsibilities, but her official title changed to Chief Information Officer. Augusti will also report to Carhartt President and COO Linda Hubbard.

The new CIO told The Wall Street Journal that one objective in her new role will be the enablement to activate inventory from across the supply chain network such that customer fulfillment can be achieved directly from retail stores or factories, bypassing the current need to first be processed by a distribution center. Enablement reportedly involves standardized communications with third-party logistics providers, suppliers, brokers or any organization that interacts with the company’s products.

Augusti further indicated to WSJ CIO Journal that the company’s data science teams, having previously dedicated 18 months addressing the collection of high-quality data will now be focused on solving and providing insights to product demand management processes.

 

Additional Insights

Similar to our previous highlighted supply chain management leadership model at Brown Forman, the elevation of both supply chain in tandem with advanced analytics and information management at Carhartt has similar objectives with a different organizational perspective.

While individual business and specific industry organizational alignment will indeed vary, the common theme remains that of a reexamination of leadership, business and technology enablement needs in the light of the learnings over the previous two years.
