Supply chain professional and educational organization APICS conducted its 2017 Annual Conference this week and Supply Chain Matters features some of this week’s highlights.
Latest SCOR Model Released
The conference featured the official launch and release of the updated Supply Chain Operations Reference Model- SCOR 12.0. Supply Chain Matters highlighted the principal changes planned within SCOR 12.0 in a blog commentary published in June.
A SCOR job task analysis survey completed by over 1600 supply chain professionals validated the increasing importance for:
- Sourcing and procurement processes being incorporated within the SCOR
- Metadata, digitization, omni-channel, and supply chain maturity model.
- Data analytics, data acquisition, data science, and predictive analysis as staff skills related to organizational supply chain initiatives.
- Continuing education and improvement of supply chain manager skills and abilities.
The updated model now includes new cost and agility metric hierarchies along with digital terminology and added best practices. The goal of this newest release is to allow supply chain leaders the ability to incorporate the latest industry advancements and best practices in their overall supply chain mapping and goal assessments.
Important Survey Results
The conference provided a backdrop for APICS to disclose findings from an its Millennials in Supply Chain research report, conducted by Peerless Research Group in conjunction with Supply Chain Management Review (SCMR) and the American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC).
This report was designed to gain insight into millennials as a critical segment of the supply chain workforce and the findings indicated that millennials are focused, engaged, enthused, and committed to working in supply chain management, and that supply chain represents a sought-after, dynamic, and rewarding long-term career choice for millennials. One of the more interesting findings was that 75 percent of millennial respondents began their careers in supply chain management, a noted stark contrast to Gen X and Baby Boomer professionals who did not plan or intend to work in the SCM arena. Once more, the report indicates that sixty percent of respondents still work in the same area in which they began their supply chain careers, with 38 percent having worked for just one employer their entire career and another 31 percent for only two employers.
All of the above is great news for the future of supply chain management. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge all the various other professional organizations that umbrella supply chain management, CSCMP, ISM, IBF among others, in their collective efforts to focus on specific education and programs that make supply chain management an attractive career choice for our future leaders.
Awards and Recognition
The conference recognized a number of businesses and individuals for their collective achievements.
Corporate Awards of Excellence were extended to Johnson Controls in the company’s commitment to productivity and advancement utilizing the APICS body of knowledge. Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals for Excellence in Transformation in its processes to reduce forecast variance, increase agility and improve adherence to the supply plan.
Individual Awards of Excellence were awarded to Sabine Simeon-Aissaoui (Supply Chain Leader), Stephen Bernard (Corporate Social Responsibility Catalyst), Samer Majdi Al-Madhoun (Diversity and Inclusion Champion) and Michael Morand (Emerging Supply Chain Leader).
The Diamond Partner Award went to France based training institute MGCM for unwavering support of the APICS Global Channel Program.
Voluntary Service Awards included a Student Voluntary Service Award for Lauren Carroll of Western Michigan University and a Student Chapter Mentor Award to Janet L. Hartley, PhD., of Bowling Green University.
In the area of Student Competition, Loyola University won first place amongst finalists from 14 schools that presented solutions for complex supply chain problems.
APICS and Deloitte had the opportunity to announce their collaboration to produce a series of case competition events aimed to promote the supply chain and logistics knowledge base. This 2018 APICS Case Competition will include regional events scheduled next February in Canada, China, Mexico, and the United States.
